One of Germany’s hottest young conducting talents comes to the Grieg Hall for an uncompromising evening of voluptuous music.

In his tone poem Also sprach Zarathustra, Richard Strauss was inspired by Nietzsche’s text of the same name - a poetic a vision of a Persian prophet who descends from a mountaintop to share his insights with the world.

The colossal orchestral score Strauss wrote as a result contains some of the composer’s most breathtaking music: rich, malleable, unpredictable, wickedly exciting, touchingly tender and intensely dramatic, all of it wrapped up in the composer’s own brand of orchestral display.

Music of intense beauty from France makes up the rest of the concert. Prepare to be led into a forest of delights and temptations by the sensual awakenings and sultry dances of Ravel’s suite for the ballet Daphnis et Chloe, and to be led into a world of dreams and mysteries by Henri Dutilleux’s Baudelaire-inspired Tout un monde lontain - the most-performed cello concerto of the late twentieth century.
