The world is awakening to the beauty, power and profundity of Die tote Stadt.
Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s opera on the subject of grief was a huge hit when it first appeared in Vienna in 1920, before its composer fled Europe for Hollywood and scored some of the great movies of the century. Then the opera fell out of the repertoire. But after landmark recent productions in London and Munich, Die tote Stadt is having a resurgence - treasured for its heartbreaking melodies, scintillating orchestration, spectacular lead roles and memorable touchstone aria ‘Glück, das mir verlieb.’
A top-draw cast leads this concert performance of Korngold’s scorching operatic vision of a man unable to come to terms with his loss. Marshaling the composer’s sumptuous and glistening orchestra, which does as much work as the opera’s plot to merge dream and reality, is artistic director of the Bergen National Opera, Eivind Gullberg Jensen.
