Verdi Requiem

Verdi Requiem

Grieghallen

Sung in Latin with Norwegian and English surtitles.

A monumental masterpiece with young and established artists based in Bergen.

The musicians in Bergen Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the singers in Edvard Grieg Youth Choir and Edvard Grieg Kor stand side by side while performing Guiseppe Verdi's iconic music in Grieghallen. Several generations of musicians numbering some three hundred souls promise a grand production of one of the world's most famous works.

Verdi's Messa da Requiem is marked by great contrasts and powerful emotions: from the exquisitely beautiful in Agnus Dei to the dramatic downhill slopes of Dies Irae, where the chorus bemoans its despair, and the orchestra thunders on with an awe-inspiring drone. The work is frequently referred to as an opera in disguise, and since its first performance in 1874 the power of the music has ensured a lasting impression on the audience.

The soloists are Artist in Residence soprano Lise Davidsen, mezzo-soprano Rihab Chaieb, tenor Freddie De Tommaso and bass-baritone Shenyang.
