Theatregoers in St Petersburg were promised a ‘fairytale ballet’ in the winter of 1892. The work that came their way was lampooned by the critics for its lack of convention, but loved by audiences who have flocked to see it ever since.
The Russian setting of a German story of toys coming to life at Christmas provided children and adults with a spectacle the likes of which had never been seen before. Carrying it all along was Tchaikovsky’s most inventive, action-packed and magically orchestrated ballet score. The Nutcracker brims with seductive charm and is filled with thrilling stylized dances including the iconic Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy. This performance from the Bergen Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, the Edvard Grieg Boys’ and Girls’ Choirs and dancers from Bergen Kulturskole heralds the start of the festive season in style.
