The Pauline Hall Competition for Women Composers 2021
The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Grieg Academy, in cooperation with Edition Wilhelm Hansen, invite emerging women composers in the Nordic countries to apply to the Pauline Hall Competition.
The winning composition will be the opening work of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra’s programme on 11 February 2021. The duration of the final work should be up to 10 minutes, and the orchestral forces available are: 3333-4331, tmp + 4, hp, pno/cel , strings.
Three composers will be given the opportunity to workshop their works, or parts of works, with the orchestra, under the mentorship of jury members. An honorarium of NOK 10,000 is available for developing works for the workshop, as well as travel and accommodation for attending the workshop.
A prize of NOK 200,000 is awarded to the winning composer, and a publishing deal for the winning work is available with Edition Wilhelm Hansen.
Applicants are to submit part of a work - an excerpt or substantial sketch - or a full work, within the above instrumentation, or an existing work that could be adapted within the above instrumentation. The submission may be a work or part of a work that has already been performed. In the case of an unfinished work, or one that requires adaptation, the composer should briefly describe how she plans to develop the work further.
In addition, applicants are asked to submit two (2) additional examples compositions (score and mp3 files, if a recording is available) from their oeuvre (for any instrumental combination) along with their CV (including biographical information).

Edition Wilhelm Hansen offers to prepare and print the material for the three finalist scores for the workshop.

WHO CAN APPLY Emerging women composers who are from the Nordic countries, or who currently reside and/or study in one of the Nordic countries.
Pauline Hall (1890-1969) was a Norwegian pioneer; a daring composer, a fearless and eloquent writer and critic, as well as well as a driving force in the Norwegian Society of Composers, and the founder of the Norwegian section of ISCM, “nyMusikk”.
