Preparing for Asia
Few works have had the enduring impact of Stravinsky’s ballet score The Rite of Spring.
When this music was first played in 1913, it appeared to turn normal musical procedures on their head. Harmony wasn’t in charge, rhythm was. And they were pounding, jagged, brutal rhythms too. But Stravinsky never meant his score to be anything other than evocative and descriptive, one reason it contains at least as much beauteous, lyrical music as it does ritual barbarism.
All that is offset by the fresh air of Grieg’s Piano Concerto, inspired by the mountains and fjords of Norway and played here by a pianist who knows all about those things, Bergen resident Leif Ove Andsnes. Tchaikovsky’s swirling Fantasy Overture to Romeo & Juliet opens this season finale with a burst of colour and passion, sending the orchestra off on its Asia tour in style.
