John Adams once said Emily Dickinson’s poem "Wild Nights" contained a ‘poetic intensity that is at once violent and sexual and full of that longing for forgetfulness which is at the core of all Dickinson’s works.’

The poem, and more, became the heart of Adams’s epic symphonic fantasy Harmonium – a musical vision of the cosmos that floats, hums and pulsates its way towards an explosion of light. This choral and orchestral work has been described as ‘a smooth liquid train with a large chorus as passengers.’

Before it, Edward Gardner conducts another huge work, this from Richard Strauss. The composer’s Also Sprach Zarathustra might have more to do with philosophy than space, but thanks to 2001: A Space Odyssey, Strauss’s is another score that will always have cosmic connotations.

As part of our Next Steps series, we welcome researchers and academics from the University of Bergen to help contextualize the themes in this concert.
