Sibelius' Violin Concerto
In the culmination to this Nordic programme, Edward Gardner takes on the greatest symphony by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius’s final orchestral masterpiece.
In his astonishing Fifth Symphony of 1922, Nielsen reflected a world changed by war with a huge struggle between darkness and light. The idyllic meets the cataclysmic in this most physical and energizing of symphonies by a man who knew Bergen well.
Sibelius’s orchestral depiction of the forest god Tapiola is perhaps the most remarkable, magical and musically radical piece the Finnish composer wrote, and a fitting prelude to his decades of silence in his woodland home. After Tapiola comes Sibelius’s love-letter to the instrument he played all his life. The incomparable Violin Concerto is played by star virtuoso James Ehnes.
