Thus one listener in 1883 described Brahms’s Serenade No. 1 in D major, a work in six movements that brims with the sort of freshness, spontaneity and inspiration that isn’t always associated with this most diligent of composers.
At this chamber concert, we hear Brahms’s chubby Serenade slimmed down to the proportions Brahms originally had in mind for it.
There were plenty who would have liked to cut Till Eulenspiegel down to size. This fearless rogue, the subject of Strauss’s most witty tone poem, was known in German folklore for playing the fool while exposing vice and corruption.
The sharp interplay and cartoon jokes of Strauss’s tone poem are made even more vivid by Franz Hasenöhrl’s version for chamber ensemble.
