TrondheimSolistene and Alisa Weilerstein
In 1945, the opera houses and concert halls that had defined Richard Strauss’s career lay in ruins.
The composer was devastated. His response was a work for strings that many have interpreted as an epitaph for civilization. Metamorphosen is dominated by a single theme from the funeral march of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, from which Strauss crafts a monument of huge pain and profundity.
The piece is tailor-made for the expressive strings of The Trondheim Soloists and its Artistic Associate Alisa Weilerstein. Fresh from a new recording of the Haydn cello concertos that has been acclaimed from Sydney to San Francisco, Weilerstein and the ensemble travel south for this guest performance, which opens with a celebration of the sound of strings from a composer whose gregarious music never fails to raise a smile, Osvaldo Golijov.
