– The best Peter Grimes I’ve ever seen. The Spectator on Peter Grimes at Edinburgh International Festival
Benjamin Britten’s operatic masterpiece Peter Grimes tells of a hard-worn, remote fishing community bound together by tradition and suspicion. It contains some of Britten’s most heart-rending, serene, uplifting and terrifying music, not least his four mighty orchestral depictions of the sea.
Edward Gardner described the last performance of Britten’s grand opera in Bergen as ‘an unbelievable experience.’ The orchestra’s music director, who has led acclaimed performances of the work at English National Opera, brings the greatest Grimes of our time Stuart Skelton to Bergen to lead the perfect cast for this concert performance, before the same forces record the work and tour with it to Oslo and London. Stand by for one of the highlights of Gardner’s tenure in Bergen and a work that will change your perception of what ‘community’ means.
