Bergen Philharmonic Youth Orchestra
Rhapsody in Blue
A tantalizing combination: the young blood of the Bergen Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, the energetic leadership of conductor Lawrence Foster and an evening of free-flowing, highly-charged symphonic ‘Rhapsodies’ including one of the most famous of all.
Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue made a star of its composer and proved how the wicked excitement of jazz could bring a world of possibilities to the concert hall.
Before it, we hear George Enescu bringing the distinct colour and vitality of Romanian music into the concert hall with his spirited Romanian Rhapsody No 1.
And finally, one of the most propulsive symphonies ever written: Robert Schumann’s captivating orchestral portrait of the deep and majestic River Rhine, complete with its splendid procession in salute to Cologne Cathedral.
