Brahms and Clara Schumann
Clara Schumann’s talent and determination as a composer were both curtailed by her marriage.
But after the death of her husband Robert, Clara benefitted from the support and encouragement of Johannes Brahms. This is when Schumann shows her resolve and mettle, extending and completing her Piano Concerto, resulting in a score which balances head and heart and contains no shortage of virtuoso fire.
Christian Ihle Hadland joins the Orchestra and Music Director Edward Gardner for the concerto, surrounded by influencing works from Brahms’s pen: his imposing Tragic Overture and to finish, the composer’s Symphony No. 2 – his gloom-tinged idyll that ultimately dismisses dark clouds with a glorious fanfare.
