No orchestra plays Grieg like the Bergen Philharmonic, probably because Norway’s most celebrated composer was once our artistic director.
At this concert one of the world’s most sought-after conductors Daniele Rustioni joins Norwegian soprano and Bergen resident Mari Eriksmoen (photo: Astrid Waller) to reveal the tenderness, songfulness and freshness that characterizes Grieg’s best music.
The concert journeys from the sprightly overture of Grieg’s Holberg Suite - music of exquisite order and equilibrium - to the magic-realism of the composer’s setting of Peer Gynt.
In between we hear more of Grieg’s best-loved music alongside some of his best-kept secrets, including the spellbinding Intermezzo from his self-repressed Symphony in C minor (which disguises the Norwegian folk song Astri, mi Astri).
Three heartfelt songs and standout highlights from his thrilling Norwegian Dances and Symphonic Dances complete the programme. A perfect chance to hear Grieg in the best possible hands!
The summer concerts are generously supported by Mr Trond Mohn.
