Surrounding Matre’s new work is music of the Norwegian fjords and mountains, a modern masterpiece from Estonia and perhaps most evocative example of orchestral storytelling ever to have been created by a French composer.
After Grieg’s own spirited Norwegian dance based on a mountain melody, Berglund conducts her own selection from Geirr Tveitt’s collection of Hardanger Fiddle tunes. The haunting timelessness of Arvo Pärt’s Fratres for cellos provides the perfect contrast to Maurice Ravel’s red-hot depiction of the shepherd lovers Daphnis et Chloé. The story, brimming with exotic passions, drew a magnificent score from Ravel in which a colourful orchestra luxuriates in its own opulence.
