Beethoven 250 – Drama and elegance
Thursday 5 December
Christian Zacharias returns to Bergen for an all-Beethoven concert forming part of the world’s celebration of 250 years since the composer’s birth.
Nobody affected the course of musical history like Beethoven, but in this concert we hear from a composer more joyous and intimate than railing and revolutionary.
Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 was actually his first – the work with which he introduced himself to the Viennese public. It is a work of elegance, composure, hushed magic and sprinkled joy. It has something of the intimacy which makes Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony such a delight. It might be known as the shyest of Beethoven’s nine, but this less-is-more symphony is a masterpiece of agility and panache.
