Like Beethoven after him, Mozart played the viola.

When pitted against the sweeter, higher toned violin, the instrument drew music of particular poignancy from Mozart, who understood the less obvious abilities of the instrument better than most. Mozart’s exquisite Duo for Violin and Viola opens this concert and is immediately followed by Beethoven’s final piano trio, whose solemn introduction soon gives way to lightheartedness as Beethoven toys with a well known tune.

At this performance in the spectacular concert hall at Troldhaugen, members of the orchestra finish with a work steeped in the Viennese school of Mozart and Beethoven. Carl Arnold was raised in Mozart’s publisher’s house before making a career in Oslo. While his music carries a certain severity reminiscent of Beethoven’s and a Mozartian elegance, his Grand Sextour of 1825 is all his own – and absolutely worthy of the ‘grand’ label.
