With Grieg in the suitcase
Thursday 28 March
As a prelude to the season’s second international tour, Edward Gardner leads the Orchestra in two scintillating concerts at home in Bergen.
On Wednesday the fast-rising cellist from Bergen, Amalie Stalheim, joins the orchestra in a performance of Elgar’s bittersweet Cello Concerto in which the composer pours out his heart in anger and remembrance. Before it, Edward takes the orchestra through Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, following his ‘authoritative’ recording of the work (The Times).
More Grieg on Thursday as Alice Sara Ott is the soloist in the composer’s Piano Concerto, a work whose combination of elegy and celebration never fails to tug at the heartstrings. Following that is a piece that could hardly be more different, and another that Edward has recorded with the orchestra recently to rave reviews. Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra was conceived for the virtuosic American orchestras of the mid-twentieth century. It is a bold, spicy and spectacular exploration of the orchestra combining thrills with delicacies.
Generously supported by Stiftelsen Kristian Gerhard Jebsen.
