‘I have set down in them my experience and suffering,’ said Gustav Mahler of his early symphonies.
In the First, Mahler begins his spiritual autobiography with a work for huge orchestra that moves from depictions of natural awakening to a tormented outburst of human pain. After a haunting funeral march, Mahler’s symphony eventually marches into triumph.
Before Mahler’s symphonic testament, Ludovic Morlot conducts the Edvard Grieg Kor and Bergen Philharmonic Chorus as they join the orchestra and soprano Marita Sølberg for Francis Poulenc’s outlandish proclamation of faith, his extravagant setting of the Gloria.
