Our celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s centenary continues with his most fascinating theatre work, semi-staged in collaboration with the Bergen National Opera.
Bernstein scored the operetta Candide in 1956, basing it on Voltaire’s novella written two centuries earlier – a political and philosophical satire whose themes of injustice and hypocrisy are as relevant now as they ever were.
After its infectious overture, Candide contains some of Bernstein’s most touching and witty music. It combines comedy, opera, operetta, satire and melodrama to produce what one of the work’s own characters describes as ‘the best of all possible worlds.’ Under the expert and inspired musical guidance of Karen Kamensek, we present this unique work live, in all its glory.
"I'm not interested in having an orchestra sound like itself. I want it to sound like the composer", Leonard Bernstein
