Musical nachspiel in the foyer with players from the Orchestra after the concert
Chief conductor Edward Gardner opens the season with a brand-new work by Ørjan Matre and the piece that changed music forever, Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.
Stravinsky’s score caused a scandal when it was first performed in 1913 and remains one of the most original and thrilling orchestral works ever conceived. This musical picture of a pagan ritual, in which a girl dances herself to death in sacrifice, is known for its brutal rhythmic drive. But it contains music of gorgeous stillness too, clothed in shimmering orchestral beauty the likes of which has never been matched.
Leif Ove Andsnes joins Edward Gardner and the Orchestra for the season opening once again, and brings with him the joyous Piano Concerto by Benjamin Britten. This sparkling, sensitive piece combines Ravel’s delicious colouring and Prokofiev’s exhilarating panache, to which Britten adds his own unmistakable heart and soul.
