Brahms’s choral masterpiece A German Requiem expressed feelings of brotherhood and consolation like no other Requiem had before it.

We glimpsed the composer’s reserved attitude towards religion in the Four Serious Songs with which this Brahms festival opened. In his Requiem, Brahms takes that expression to its height. Dignity takes precedence over judgment and damnation in music that speaks of spiritual comfort and the endurance of northern European traditions.

For the climax of our Brahms festival, chief conductor Edward Gardner leads the Orchestra, leading vocal soloists from Britain and the Bergen Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra in a performance of Brahms’s message of hope for all humanity.
