Bernstein at 100
Thursday 20 September - Friday 21 September
The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates its American links in this concert marking the centenary of Leonard Bernstein, one of the USA’s most iconic cultural figures and a man whose musicianship knew no borders.
The hustle and bustle of Bernstein’s New York found its way into so much of the composer’s music, including the depictions of city nightlife found in the ballet score Fancy Free and the musical On The Town.
But in West Side Story, Bernstein supplemented his wicked syncopations and fast-lane drive with the most memorable tunes he would write. John Wilson and Sarah Shafer join us for this celebration of Bernstein’s New York, while his contemporary Samuel Barber provides a nostalgic reminiscence of the slower pace of life found in Knoxville, Tennessee.
«I can't live one day without hearing music, playing it, studying it, or thinking about it», Leonard Bernstein
