For his orchestral rollercoaster A Hero’s Life, Richard Strauss cast around for a heroic figure to depict and settled on someone rather close to home – himself.

Like Stenhammar’s confident statement of ambition Excelsior!, Ein heldenleben scatters its adversaries with panache. But it concludes with deep reflection, a humbling glimpse of life’s spiritual journey.

In the third of his piano concertos, Beethoven reached for new dramatic tools. His orchestra took in the warmth and colour of added clarinets, trumpets and drums and played mostly in the darkness of a minor key. But eventually, after the vigour and wit of its final movement, Beethoven’s concerto discovers the radiance of C major.

Yefim Bronfman joins the orchestra under Sir Andrew Davis for a heroic season finale.

«It's safe to say there is no pianist around remotely like Yefim Bronfman. Labor doesn't seem to ever enter the equation; he is simply everywhere, instantly and all the time», The Philadelphia Inquirer

The concerts are arranged with generous support from Stiftelsen Kristian Gerhard Jebsen
