18.45: Pre-concert talk by Gunnar Danbolt
Exiled in the USA at the end of his career, Rachmaninov wrote a series of works drenched in nostalgia and melancholy.
The Symphonic Dances was one. But the piece brims over with panache and colour too. It was conceived as vehicle for Eugene Ormandy’s virtuosic Philadelphia Orchestra and exploited orchestral volume and brilliance with an excitement only Rachmaninov could muster.
Russian violinist Viktoria Mullova plays the Sibelius violin concerto, and Edward Gardner begins the concert with Janacek’s fiery depiction of the heroic Cossack Taras Bulba.
«A truly blazing performance of Taras Bulba», BBC Music Magazine on Gardner and the orchestra’s recording.
