«An outstanding instrumental soloist who is also brilliant conductor», BZ Basel about Christian Zacharias

This season’s Concert for University Employees focuses on the year 1784, when two of the greatest composers of the Classical era were getting into their stride. That year, Joseph Haydn was commissioned to write his six landmark Paris Symphonies, works that proved more lively, engaging and musically advanced than any symphonies he had written before. The ‘Hen’ quickly became the set’s favourite.

Meanwhile Haydn’s colleague Mozart had moved to Vienna, determined to enchant the Viennese with a series of piano concertos that would show him at his best. The concerto numbered 19, like Haydn’s Hen, was the best of the concertos Mozart wrote in 1784 and is a work that radiates joy from beginning to end.

Christian Zacharias also brings with him Poulenc’s dancing Sinfonietta and Mozart’s charming Overture to The Marriage of Figaro.

The concert is made possible through the generous support of Stiftelsen Kristian Gerhard Jebsen
