Edward Gardner continues his Sibelius Symphonies series with the mighty and inspiring Second Symphony

At first, many believed the soaring, optimistic final tune of Sibelius’s Second Symphony was a hymn of protest as Finland struggled to assert its independence from Russia. That tune is perhaps the most heartfelt and famous that Sibelius would write, but its origins were rather more personal. This was music that spoke of new life in the context of tragedy, as Sibelius’s family emerged from grief following a series of deaths.

Edward Gardner continues his Sibelius Symphonies series with the mighty and inspiring Second Symphony, after a brand new work by the Norwegian composer and pioneer of computer-aided composition, Asbjørn Schaathun. His work Solomon’s House is based on a text by the Enlightenment philosopher Francis Bacon, in which Bacon’s idea of a house on an island becomes the ‘sound house’ of modern electroacoustic theory.
