Gardner and Sibelius I
Thursday 25 January
Edward Gardner’s Nordic focus continues
A new symphony was brewing inside the troubled Jean Sibelius in 1914, but he was struggling to write it down. Then, one day in April, the composer glimpsed a flock of sixteen swans soaring upwards into the sky for their migration. ‘One of my greatest experiences’, the composer recalled in his diary, at the same time as he wrote the famous ‘swan theme’ of his uplifting Fifth Symphony.
Edward Gardner’s Nordic focus continues in this concert during which Artist in Residence Lise Davidsen sings Sibelius’s atmospheric depiction of ‘the daughter of the air’ from Finnish mythology and the touching love songs Wagner wrote for his one-time beloved Mathilde Wesendonck. The concert opens with the first Norwegian performance of a new work, Clocks from A Winter’s Tale, by the British composer Ryan Wigglesworth.
