Verdi's opera Otello is based on Shakespeare's powerful drama about the dark side of man.
After the triumph of his grand spectacle Aida, Giuseppe Verdi withdrew from opera for over a decade. Then, faced with the best libretto he had ever worked with, the composer made a spectacular return to the stage with the finest and most gripping tragedy Italian opera had ever seen: Otello.
The libretto was entirely different from Shakespeare’s play, but was full of propulsive drama nonetheless. Verdi’s music embodied and intensified that drama at every opportunity. The composer forged a new, continuous musical style with a richer orchestral tapestry and a new way of colouring his characters. Otello has everything, from vile hatred to tender love, and hurtles towards its conclusion with fury.
Edward Gardner is reunited with Stuart Skelton, his Otello from acclaimed performances at English National Opera in London, for this semi-staged performance given in collaboration with the Bergen National Opera.
