Christian Ihle Hadland and Mario Venzago join the orchestra for the first performances of a new piano concerto from one of Norway’s most distinguished composers: La cittá della Luce by Lasse Thoresen.

Surrounding that piece, we hear music of joy and turbulence from two of the greatest symphony-writers who ever lived. Haydn liked nothing more than to bend symphonic rules and Symphony No 64 surprises at every turn with its outrageous outbursts and willful distortions.

Schumann aimed to capture the majesty and energy of the River Rhine in his Third Symphony. But Schumann’s mind was increasingly a place of darkness. He jumped into the Rhine’s deep waters in 1854 in an attempt to take his own life. Weeks later he was dead. But his love for the river shines through in Schumann’s momentous, life-affirming masterpiece.

«His musicality is very subtle, and no other pianist can match his poised and pearlised touch», The Independent about Ihle Hadland
