After the concert: Nachspiel with musicians from the orchestra
Edward Gardner conducts the Bergen Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in Dvořák’s symphonic masterpiece, after more music born in America.
Antonín Dvořák wrote his last symphony in New York, where he’d moved to run the city’s new music academy. In his symphony ‘From the New World’, the composer wove the spirituals and plantation songs of America into music of intense warmth, drama and spontaneity. Nature shines through this most popular of Dvořák’s symphonies, but so does the sense of sadness and longing that the composer felt, far away from his Czech homeland.
Edward Gardner conducts the Bergen Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in Dvořák’s symphonic masterpiece, after more music born in America. Sonoko Miriam Welde, winner of the Norwegian Soloists Prize, is the soloist in Samuel Barber’s full-blooded but highly tuneful Violin Concerto, and before that comes a thrilling piece of American minimalism: John Adams’s A Short Ride in a Fast Machine.
