Grieg's A minor
Thursday 21 September
One of the orchestra’s signature works in combination with Shostakovich’s most famous symphony.
Lars-Thomas Holm, the orchestra’s Assistant Conductor, begins the concert with Knut Vaage’s Troll, a composition commissioned by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, which performed it in the Grieg-year 2007. Troll is based on Edvard Grieg’s lyric piece Troldtog (March of the Trolls), and is a nice overture to Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor with Marina Kan Selvik as soloist. Selvik is a price winning piano talent, born in Moscow, where she also studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire. She lives in Norway now.
Everything was at stake for Shostakovich when his fifth symphony was premiered in 1937. The year before his music was condemned and treated as vulgar and chaotic. He was now forced to make music which the authorities would accept. Symphony No. 5 was an immediate success and is still his best known symphony.
